My name is Rachel Carr and I started This Is Carrt in 2014 when my husband's job moved to Germany and I decided to give up my day job in the city and go with him on the adventure! I had always loved to travel and write, and was also passionate about photography so one day I sat down and mingled all three of them on this website and my Etsy page. I write about a wide range of things like how to cope with airline hand luggage allowances to what to wear to any destination wedding. However, when I write up a holiday destination, there are more often than not a few common themes linking what are otherwise very different places:

1) Food. I love to eat. It structures my day to day life as well as any trip that I go on. I think food is a great way to start to experience a new culture as well as meeting new people.

2) Value. I don't get swayed by places to be seen and clothing to be seen in for the sake of it. I hate being ripped off. Be that by a fiver or by hundreds of pounds. If an activity or an excursion I go on is expensive but an amazing experience, I will still highly recommend it, but won't recommend it simply because it is deemed luxury.

3) Beauty. I love looking at pretty things. They don't have to have a purpose!

Please do follow This Is Carrt on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest.

5 Tips for Artifying Interiors

Rachel Carr

I love art. Yet, I really struggle to hang pictures in a way that shows my pieces off to their best. I think, partly, this is due to having quite eclectic tastes, but, mainly, during my degree I missed the module about hanging an exhibition. With this in mind, and many a blank wall in my new house, I asked the wonderful Marie Burden of Cobalt Interiors for help on this issue. Her tips were so useful that I decided to put them here on my blog for all to view. The pictures come from her website, which I urge everyone to view. I heart her aesthetic!

Monochrome Mania

Rachel Carr

For this week’s blog, I thought I would go back to basics and focus on one of my favourite art mediums: black and white photography. I have taken this opportunity to turn some of my most popular past images into a new composition by stripping out the colour and focussing, instead, on tones and linear qualities of my images. I have included a braod range of genres – street, landscape, and of course my beloved flowers.

Oh, We're Going to Barbados

Rachel Carr

Last week, my Singapore buddies got married in a small, intimate wedding on the beautiful island of Barbados. Whilst they are the type of friends for whom I would travel to Magaluf to see them marry, it was a real treat to have the opportunity to go to one of my favourite places.

Idyllic Andalucia

Rachel Carr

I was incredibly lucky as a kid to be able to spend whole summers at a time in the foothills behind Marbella. Given my childhood was now decades ago, the area had not yet been infiltrated by high heeled orange people, though it was already known as a millionaire's playground. Indeed, the golf course on which our abode was situated was also home to Sean Connery. I have returned every year since my first summer trip there and, despite the obvious changes it has seen, I still love the place. Yes, it can almost verge on tacky in parts, but those parts are few and far between - regardless of what the gossip pages of the Daily Mail may suggest.

Beautiful Brugge

Rachel Carr

At home, in Paderborn, I live an 8 hour drive away from my family and friends who reside in my home town of London. Yes, I could fly, but due to logistics to and from the airport on the continent, my husband and I often choose to get on the autobahn and head west to Calais, and then up to London from Dover. Recently, however, I had the  brainwave to stop off for a couple of nights en route at Brugge. It was one of the best ideas I have ever had. I was overwhelmed by both the beauty and strength of the beer that Brugge provides.

Balinese Beauty

Rachel Carr

When I was a kid, Bali was a dream destination for me. Looking back, I have no idea why as I had never been taught about it or learnt its culture. Or even where it was. Yet it took hold on my list of things to do when I am older and luckily enough for me, at the end of last year I was able to tick it off.

Paris, Je t'aime

Rachel Carr

My envy during the recent Paris Fashion week was twofold. Not only did I crave the clothes, I was beyond jealous at all those who were spending time in the city of lights.

I heart Paris.

Limited Edition Prints - Landscape Series

Rachel Carr

An odd thing happened yesterday whilst I was working from home,  the sun came out for the first time since before Christmas. I had forgotten what it looked and felt like! Bearing that in mind, I fished out my trusty, and at that point dusty, Canon DSLR, put the lead on my dog and set off for a walk into the farmland behind my house. The results are shown in my latest album, which I hope you enjoy. I know I enjoyed taking them.
