40 Nelson Road
New Malden

My name is Rachel Carr and I started This Is Carrt in 2014 when my husband's job moved to Germany and I decided to give up my day job in the city and go with him on the adventure! I had always loved to travel and write, and was also passionate about photography so one day I sat down and mingled all three of them on this website and my Etsy page. I write about a wide range of things like how to cope with airline hand luggage allowances to what to wear to any destination wedding. However, when I write up a holiday destination, there are more often than not a few common themes linking what are otherwise very different places:

1) Food. I love to eat. It structures my day to day life as well as any trip that I go on. I think food is a great way to start to experience a new culture as well as meeting new people.

2) Value. I don't get swayed by places to be seen and clothing to be seen in for the sake of it. I hate being ripped off. Be that by a fiver or by hundreds of pounds. If an activity or an excursion I go on is expensive but an amazing experience, I will still highly recommend it, but won't recommend it simply because it is deemed luxury.

3) Beauty. I love looking at pretty things. They don't have to have a purpose!

Please do follow This Is Carrt on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest.

Our Blog - Dedicated to Travel, Food, Lifestyle and Fashion

With a love of travel and writing as well as a passion for photography, this blogsite and my Etsy page mingles all three.

Top UK Spas

Rachel Carr

Whilst I lived in Germany with my husband for two years, I learnt a great many things. I can now drink a whole stein of beer and hold my own, I can make a mean schnitzel, I can drive fast without the fear of god running through me, and I also learnt to love a spa. Interestingly, for a woman, I always found spas a bit 'and what next?'. I think I found it hard to realise that the whole point of going was not activity, but just indulging in doing absolutely nothing. Apologies if I'm telling you how to skin a cat here, but the point of spas genuinely passed me by up until I moved to the North Rhine Westphalia area.

Foodie Destinations

Rachel Carr

Whenever I plan a trip, a great deal of my research is based around food: what to eat and where to eat it. In fact, my loved ones would probably argue that whenever I plan my day, a very similar process transpires. But I thought, for this week’s blog post, I would recommend five city breaks and the classic dish to try once there. And, because it’s January and we’re all still waiting for a much longed for pay cheque after Christmas, I have suggested a London restaurant that would be a suitable short term replacement for a weekend away.

Visiting Bibury - A Cotswolds Must See

Rachel Carr

Despite coach loads of tourists being dropped off on the hour, every hour, there is simply no denying that Bibury, situated in the Cotswolds, is absolutely beautiful. Everywhere you look is another picture perfect postcard shot waiting to be taken. Plus it is one of those rare English places that actually gets better in the Winter. As the days get shorter, the evenings longer and the outside air gets colder, the want to hibernate inside one of its many cute cottages or typical countryside pubs, becomes more and more legitimate. My husband and I visited last weekend having gatecrashed a romantic weekend away that my brother had planned for his wife.

The Best Alternative European Destinations

Rachel Carr

There are many places in Europe that are sadly so fantastic that they are either overrun with tourists or are so expensive that they are no longer a viable option unless you travel at 06.20 on a Tuesday from Southend Airport and return at 0100 the following day. Below are my alternative options for well known destinations that may have fallen prey to this.

Restaurants Suitable For Celebrations

Rachel Carr

Last week, I celebrated my birthday and I was spoilt rotten, as usual, by my wonderful husband and family. True to my, and my family's taste, we saw the day in and out through the means of over eating and drinking at fantastic restaurants. It got me to thinking about other restaurants that I have been to in the UK that are great 'treat' restaurants - the ones that you go to for special occasions only. I have listed a handful of my ideas that I strongly recommend you add to your list of places to eat, but I'd love to hear more - just contact me here.

Reasons Why Lisbon Is The Perfect Weekend Destination

Rachel Carr

A couple of weekends ago, one of my oldest friends, Miss T, and I finally ticked off Lisbon from our hit list. We had very high expectations of the city and luckily the Portuguese capital far exceeded them. I absolutely loved every second of our stay there and thought that the city made a perfect weekend away given its ease of access (just a short direct flight from Heathrow), plethora of excellent restaurants and swathes of culture. We stayed at the LX hotel in the Bairro Alto district, which I would happily stay at again. It was chic, had attentive service and its location was walking distance to 99% of the places Miss T and I wanted to go to. Below I've listed some of my must dos for the city, but really you could just sit at coffee shop all day and watch the world go by in this buzzy capital.

Last week, I submitted five pictures to the Royal Horticultural Society’s annual photographic competition. The snaps I entered are below and I have discussed them, where they were taken and why I submitted them. I’d love to know what my readers think – and see any floral or botanic pictures they have taken! Just contact me below!
