My name is Rachel Carr and I started This Is Carrt in 2014 when my husband's job moved to Germany and I decided to give up my day job in the city and go with him on the adventure! I had always loved to travel and write, and was also passionate about photography so one day I sat down and mingled all three of them on this website and my Etsy page. I write about a wide range of things like how to cope with airline hand luggage allowances to what to wear to any destination wedding. However, when I write up a holiday destination, there are more often than not a few common themes linking what are otherwise very different places:

1) Food. I love to eat. It structures my day to day life as well as any trip that I go on. I think food is a great way to start to experience a new culture as well as meeting new people.

2) Value. I don't get swayed by places to be seen and clothing to be seen in for the sake of it. I hate being ripped off. Be that by a fiver or by hundreds of pounds. If an activity or an excursion I go on is expensive but an amazing experience, I will still highly recommend it, but won't recommend it simply because it is deemed luxury.

3) Beauty. I love looking at pretty things. They don't have to have a purpose!

Please do follow This Is Carrt on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest.

Top Tips For Travel in 2017

Rachel Carr

2016 was a year of highs and lows for me - all of which taught me something. From the sublime: what I want from life. To the ridiculous: that I can never really give up carbs.  Travel wise, I realised what to repeat and what never to mention again. Given that I want this blog to be helpful to other people than just myself, I've written here my tongue in cheek, top tips for travel in 2017 as opposed to listing my new year's resolutions regarding my waistline and other such personal matters.

1) If you have an opportunity to go to Lisbon, take it.

2) England really is a viable option for a holiday

3) Just admit that WHEN you go to Italy, carbs will make up most of every meal.

4) There's more to the beautiful island of Barbados than just beach

5) Colmar's canals in France are less touristy than Venice's, and much less smelly.

6) Valencia is a European holiday destination that has it all (good food, stunning beach, beautiful architecture and swathes of culture)

7) Munich is fun to visit at any time of year, not just when the Oktoberfest is on (in September)

Munich is a chic, cosmopolitan city that is simply dripping in things to do for all tastes. I went with my girlfriend Annie, though it would suit all holiday needs - from a romantic weekend away to a stag do.

8) Germany, in general, is an underrated and much overlooked holiday destination.

9) Lille is a beautiful town, when there aren't World Cup fans rioting everywhere.

10) No matter how much you love travel, home is always where the heart is.
